GMO’s – Genetically Modified Organisms and Our Kids

GMOs are messing with our kids.  Last night I watched a stunning documentary about genetically modified (GM) foods and all the chronic illness they’ve caused — from skyrocketing allergies and autism in children to bowel disorders and cancer. I crawled into my son’s bed, listening to him snore from his allergic rhinitis and held back tears. Certain biotech firms are playing roulette with all of us, by genetically modifying food and peddling pesticides — all in the name of profit.

What is a GMO? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. In a lab, biotech firms take genes from one species and insert them into another, creating a new species that would not be possible in nature or through traditional crossbreeding.

For example, Monsanto has genetically modified seeds to grow corn that will produce toxins so that bugs die when they eat that corn. From anecdotal evidence, farm animals suffer chronic illness (and in some cases death) on GMO feed, which clears up when they switch to non-GMO feed. The first peer-reviewed scientific study on the matter found massive tumors in rats that were fed Monsanto’s GMO corn. Yikes!

And these fabulous products just keep on coming folks! There are “Roundup Ready” crops which sadly include many of the corn, cotton, canola and soy crops grown in the U.S. These GM crops are:

genetically engineered to tolerate heavy dousing of Roundup. Interestingly, the same company, Monsanto, developed both the pesticide and the genetically engineered seed created to handle that pesticide — they’re sold together as a package.”,1

So when we eat these GM crops, or products derived from them, we are literally eating Roundup and its main ingredient, Glyphosate. Glyphosate has been linked to non-Hodgkins lymphoma, ADD, and high rates of miscarriage. I am a firm believer in technological advancement, but this is mad science.

While I’ve painted a dark picture there is a bright side: We have the power as consumers, voters and educators to change all this.

Vote YES on California Proposition 37! Prop 37 requires that GM products be labeled as such. GMO labeling has been successfully implemented in more than 50 countries! Let’s make it happen here in California. If GMO companies insist their products are safe, they should be happy to stand by them, right? So why are biotech and industrial food companies putting up millions to defeat prop 37? Let’s not let them win.

Only buy corn, soy and other products certified by the NON GMO project. Here is their searchable certified products list. and shopping guides.

Write to Michelle or Barack Obama. Tell them you oppose President Obama’s appointment of Michael Taylor, (a former Monsanto VP and lobbyist), as senior advisor to the FDA. As an FDA official in the 90s, Taylor argued to allow GMOs into the U.S. food supply without undergoing a single test to determine their safety. Petition to POTUS
Petition to FLOTUS

Finally educate others. Share this excellent video on GMOs and Prop 37 Tell your voting friends about it, especially moms, whose instincts will get them gossiping like organically-fed hens.

I’m not a scientist; I’m a kid’s music artist. I’m not even a GMO-expert. I’m just a concerned mother. And I have to speak out — because this remarkable 11-year old wasn’t afraid to:

Eat safely. Tweet tweet.
